Welcome to Laurel Kindergarten and First Grade!

Welcome to Laurel Kindergarten and First Grade!
My name is Karen Taylor.  I have been teaching for 20 years, most of them in Kindergarten.  I have a Bachelor of Science degree from Appalachian State University, and I am working on my Master of Education degree at East Tennessee State University now. This is my first year with First-Graders.  The First-Graders are doing an awesome job of showing Kindergarteners the ropes about being in school, and they are handling their new responsibilities very well!  When older kids help younger ones, all of them are winners.
Building Blocks is the Language Arts framework that we use in Kindergarten, and Four Blocks is used in First Grade.  You can learn more about both by visiting www.wfu.edu/fourblocks .  The lines between the two overlap somewhat with the K-1 combination.

We do much of our K-1 work together, branching out into Learning Stations (centers) so that all of the children can work on their own levels.  For example, at the Writing Station, children might have a task as simple as tracing letters or as difficult as writing a story.  At the Math Station, a child might sort blocks or do two-digit subtraction.

We are looking forward to a super year in Mrs. Taylor’s K-1 class!
