Welcome to Fifth Grade!

Hello! You are visiting the 5th grade web page of Angie Wills.  I am the 5th grade homeroom teacher at Laurel Elementary.  I can be found teaching 4th, 5th, and 6th grade Math, as well as, 5th grade Social Studies.  I am so glad that you took time to visit our classroom web page.  It is my hope that you will find information here that will be helpful to parents and students.
I am very excited to be teaching so many wonderful students and I hope that they learn more about math this year than they ever thought possible! I also hope that I can make social studies come “alive” for the 5th graders.
Although this year will be full of fun and learning, it may also be challenging at times because we will be covering a lot of material.  It is extremely important that your child is at school everyday unless there is an unavoidable circumstance.  When students miss school it is impossible for them to ever make up that day.  I will try to catch the student up and help them learn the new material that they missed, but this will still not be the same as learning in class.
If at any time during the school year you need to reach me, there are several ways that you can do so.  You may call the school and leave a message and I will call you back or you can reach me every day but Thursday between 1:25-2:10 P.M. during my planning time.  You can also send me an e-mail at willsa@k12tn.net.  I check my e-mail several times throughout the day, but if something is urgent you should probably call and leave me a message at the school.  I encourage parents to stay in touch with me throughout the year.  It has been my experience that students tend to be more successful in school when teachers and parents work together.  I enjoy talking with parents, so please let me know if I can do anything to make this school year better for your child.
Below I have a list of web-sites that may be of interest to students and parents.  Students always seem to like to find web-sites that are fun and parents like to find sites that will be beneficial for students.  I hope that the following list of web-sites will be useful and fun for students.
www.aplusmath.com-  This site has flash cards, games, and activities related to various math skills.  It also has algebra games and a game for order of operations.
http://mathforum.org/dr.math- This site can be used for students to ask math questions that they are having a difficult time answering.
www.brainbashers.com- This web-site has logic puzzles, brain teasers, riddles, and games.  This site is designed to get you thinking!
www.coolmath.com- This site is awesome! It has a place that explains scratch addition and lattice multiplication.  There are sections for kids, teachers, and parents on this site.
www.math.com- This site has math for all ages.  One really neat thing on this site is all different types of calculators.
www.harcourtschool.com/menus/math_advantage.html- Games galore!
www.prongo.com- This site has math activities broken down by age.  This site also has a joke section which I am sure kids will love.
www.teachrkids.com- This site has a wide variety of activities for you to check out.
http://funschool.kaboose.com/index.html- There is a game that reinforces the skills of odd and even numbers, prime and composite numbers, divisibility rules.  There is much more on this site other than math, and I am sure kids will enjoy it.
http://edweb.tusd.k12.az.us/ekowalcz/math/elementary_web_sites.htm- This site is a compilation of math sites.  It lists the specific skill that the game or activity addresses.
www.internet4classrooms.com- Students need no introduction to this site.  It is one that teachers use all the time at school.
And the last one… www.learningplanet.com- I could not possibly complete this list without putting students’ favorite math web-site on it.  They love to play the game “Math Mayhem.”  In this game students decide whether they will work on addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division facts.  Once they decide they race against others that are playing on-line and try to beat them.  This site also has several other games that are of high quality.
