Mrs. Paula Stewart, School Counselor

What does a school counselor do?
A school counselor works with children to help in their academic, social, and personal development.

How can a child see the school counselor?
A child can be referred to the school counselor by a parent or teacher, or children can come in on their own to see the counselor.

What kinds of things do school counselors talk about with kids?
The death of a family member, making friends, how to handle a bully, anger management, peer pressure, loss of a special pet, and hundreds of other things.

Will the school counselor keep information about children and their families private?
Yes! Children and families can rely on the school counselor to keep information private. School counselors are required by law to report any incidence of child abuse or neglect.

Who is my child's school counselor?
Many parents and children will remember me from my eight years with the Johnson County Health Department WIC program. I returned to school to earn a masters degree in counseling and have been employed with Johnson County schools since January 2004. I am a Johnson County native and am very happy to have the opportunity to work with children in my home county. I am at Mountain City Elementary on Monday, Thursday, and Friday, at Shady Elementary on Tuesday and at Laurel Elementary on Wednesday. Parents, I will be happy to talk with you about your child any time. You can leave messages for me at 727-8512.
